National Lab Network

National Lab Network

There are approximately 260,000 certified laboratories in the U.S. that provide clinical testing services. With so many labs to choose from,  it can be challenging to select which labs are best for the patient in terms of cost and quality, especially with the increased popularity of high deductible health benefit plans where patients share more of testing costs.

Beacon has developed relationships with a national network of labs called Labs-of-Choice™ to provide physicians with greater access to quality and affordably priced lab tests.

What Are Labs-of-Choice?

Our forty-nine Labs-of-Choice™ are distinguished by their quality attributes, preferred pricing, electronic interfaces with physician practices, and market presence and penetration, as they represent approximately 40% of all outpatient lab testing in the U.S.  Each lab is committed to providing affordable testing and adhering to quality lab practices, including:

  • College of American Pathologists (CAP) certification.
  • Electronic results and ordering.
  • Subspecialty review of complex pathology.
  • Second reads on pathology.

How Does It Work?

Health plans can choose to promote Labs-of-Choice™ with physicians within our point-of-care Physician Decision Support® (PDS) platform. When providers order tests, Labs-of-Choice can be preferentially presented to physicians as labs known for their quality and affordable testing.  Physicians may not be aware of a lab’s quality attributes and test pricing, however, when they are provided this knowledge including specific test pricing, they generally choose labs that will provide their patients with high quality and affordable testing, which means lower out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

Importantly, health plans can customize their Labs-of-Choice network by selecting labs that best meet their strategic network objectives.

What Are the Benefits?

Our Labs-of-Choice® program is an asset to health plans, providers, patients and labs.  When a provider selects a Lab-of-Choice™®, patients typically have lower out-of-pocket costs and higher quality testing.  And, Labs-of-Choice™® are recognized for their significant operational and technology investments (robotics, CAP accreditation, etc.) that are necessary to produce high quality and affordable tests.
